Upper Kodori Attacked
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 9 Aug.'08 / 17:30

Abkhaz armed forces launched an operation to drive Georgian forces out of the upper Kodori Gorge, Reuters reported quoting Sergey Shamba, the foreign minister of breakaway Abkhazia.

The Georgian leadership has confirmed that attacks were carried out on its positions in the gorge, which is the only area in the breakaway Abkhazia under the Tbilisi’s control.

“Several attacks has been conducted, but all of them have been repelled,” President Saakashvili said while meeting with a group of opposition politicians on August 9.

According to the Georgian side the Russian military aircrafts have bombed five villages in the Upper Kodori Gorge, including Omarishara, Kvabchara, Sakeni, Azhara and Chkhalta. No casualties were reported.
