Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 22 Jan.'06 / 18:39

Russian energy giant Gazprom is ready to supply Georgia with gas via Azerbaijan, Davit Morchiladze, Gazprom’s representative to Georgia, said at a news conference on January 22.

He said that Gazprom will increase its gas supply to Azerbaijan so that the latter could provide gas to Georgia.

The gas supply from Russia was cut off after explosions occurred on two gas pipelines in Russia’s North Ossetian republic early on Sunday.

Morchiladze said that Georgia was receiving about 7 million cubic meters of gas per day. In the event that gas is delivered to Georgia via Azerbaijan, Gazprom will be able to provide Georgia with 4-5 million cubic meters of gas per day.

Earlier on Sunday, Georgian officials said that they were working with their Azeri counterparts to start delivering gas based on a bilateral agreement between Tbilisi and Baku which states that Azerbaijan will export gas to Georgia in cases of emergency.
