The Georgian government’s parliamentary secretary Giorgi Khuroshvili criticized on February 23 a draft law on lustration proposed by the opposition Democratic Front parliamentary faction.

The draft law is aimed at excluding former Communist Party functionaries and officers of and/or collaborators with the ex-Soviet secret services from serving in the state structures of Georgia.

The MPs discussed the draft law at a session of the Parliamentary Committee for Legal Issues on February 23.

The government’s parliamentary secretary said during the discussions that the draft law will not be effective, as Georgia has no tools to identify those agents who served in the KGB. The main list of agents is currently in Moscow and unavailable to the Georgian side, he sad.

Parliamentarians from the ruling National Movement party backed Giorgi Khuroshvili’s position.
