EU Envoy Downplays Importance of South Ossetia Referendum

EU Special Representative to the South Caucasus Peter Semneby, who is currently visiting Moscow, said on September 13 that the results of the South Ossetian independence referendum will have no meaning for the European Union.
 
Peter Semneby said that the referendum will not contribute to the conflict resolution process in South Ossetia, according to Russian news agencies.

Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry backed an upcoming independence referendum in Moldova’s breakaway region Transdnestria scheduled for this Sunday and said in a statement issued on September 13 that the European Union should not ignore the results of the referendum.
