Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 29 Mar.'07 / 18:42

Parliament, on March 28, ratified an agreement on the Baku-Akhalkalaki-Kars railway project linking Azerbaijan with Turkey via Georgia.

Georgian lawmakers also ratified on the same day a separate agreement with Azerbaijan, according to which Baku will lend USD 200 million to Georgia to finance the construction of its portion of the railway. Georgia will have to repay the loan with 1% annual interest within 25 years.

A 29 kilometer-long railway will be constructed on Georgian territory from Akhalkalaki to the Turkish border, and a 192 kilometer portion of already existing railway infrastructure, also in Georgia, will be rehabilitated within the framework of this project.
