Ex-Foreign Minister Skeptical over Tbilisi’s S.Ossetia Tactic
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 4 May.'07 / 17:59

Salome Zourabichvili, ex-foreign minister and leader of opposition Georgia’s Way party, has said Tbilisi’s policy towards South Ossetia, involving the promotion of alternative leader Dimitri Sanakoev, would do nothing to resolve the conflict.

“This is not a policy which can lead to the reintegration of the region… I do not see any difference between [alternative leader Dimitri] Sanakoev and [secessionist leader Eduard] Kokoity… what is our policy with regard to the Tskhinvali region and what kind of game are we playing?” Zourabichvili said at a news conference on May 4.

Zourabichvili's remarks put her at odds with the accepted political position on this issue; not only the government, but even the major opposition parties, all support promotion of Sanakoev.
