Ban Ki-moon Visits Georgia

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon made a brief and surprise stopover in Tbilisi on June 29.

He met President Saakashvili, Foreign Minister Gela Bezhuashvili and Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze during his “few hour” stay in Tbilisi, according to the Foreign Ministry.

No statements for the press were made.

The UN Secretary General arrived in Tbilisi at about 5 pm local time after paying a four-hour visit to Afghanistan.

Ban Ki-moon’s predecessor, Kofi Annan, also paid a brief and surprise visit to Tbilisi in November 2005.

“So called frozen conflicts and further activation of the UN’s role in the resolution of the Abkhaz conflict could have been the agenda of talks,” MP Nika Rurua, deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee for defense and security said on June 29.
