Bagapsh Vows to Reclaim Upper Kodori
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 24 Aug.'07 / 14:35

Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh said on August 23 that upper Kodori Gorge was Abkhazia’s territory and no one should doubt Sokhumi would reclaim it.

Georgian central authorities established a presence in upper Kodori Gorge in breakaway Abkhazia last summer, after cracking down on rebel warlord Emzar Kvitsiani’s militias. Previously the gorge had been beyond Tbilisi's control, but it had also been a no-go area for the Abkhaz secessionist authorities.

Bagapsh made his remarks while viewing Abkhaz military exercises at the Tsebelda training ground near the Kodori Gorge. Abkhaz troops were training in repelling an imaginary enemy assault in the mountainous area. Maneuvers are scheduled to be continued at Nagvalou training ground near Ochamchire on August 24 to train in countering seaborne attacks.
