Russia Bans Import of Abkhaz Agricultural Products - Abkhaz Reports
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 27 Aug.'07 / 17:57

The export of agricultural products from Abkhazia to the Russian Federation has been banned, Said Tarkil, the deputy head of the Abkhaz customs service, said on August 27.

Russia has reportedly cited the spread of a pig disease, African Swine Fever (ASF), in Abkhazia as the reason for the decision. Tarkil, however, said that the ban also included vegetables.

“This [ban on vegetables] is a source of serous concern as the citrus season is coming near,” Tarkil said, according to the Abkhaz leader’s website.

The export of agricultural products, mainly tangerines and oranges to Russia, represents a key component of the Abkhaz economy.
