PM Says Central Bank Chief Nomination Still Unclear
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 5 Sep.'07 / 18:13

Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli said on September 5 that the situation surrounding the nomination of the central bank chief would be clarified at the end of the month.

“It will be clarified by the end of September. At this point, [winning Parliament’s approval of] the reshuffled cabinet is more important,” PM Nogaideli said.

The statement by the PM is seen as an obvious sign that the political current is flowing against him in his attempts to have his nominee, ex-Finance Minister Lexo Alexishvili, take over as the chief of the central bank.

On August 30 when the new cabinet members were named, PM Zurab Nogaideli said: “Lexo Alexishvili, the finance minister, will replace Roman Gotsiridze as the president of the National Bank of Georgia.”

The nomination has, however, been challenged by Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze.
