Thousands Protest in Batumi
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 23 Oct.'07 / 20:16

Several thousand people participated in an opposition-organized protest rally in Batumi, Adjara, on October 23.

The rally was part of a campaign by ten opposition parties to push for early parliamentary elections. As a lead-up to a planned rally outside Parliament in Tbilisi in November, the opposition has been holding rallies throughout the regions. The protesters in Batumi dispersed after a couple of hours of peaceful protest.

Before arriving in Batumi, opposition leaders held protest rallies in Chokhatauri and Ozurgeti, both in the region of Guria, on October 23.

Opposition leaders plan to travel to a number of towns in the Samegrelo region, also in western Georgia, this week.
