New Chief of National Guard Appointed
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 11 Dec.'07 / 16:15

Colonel Davit Aptsiauri has been appointed Commander of the Georgian National Guard, replacing Col. Nikoloz Janjgava, the Georgian Defense Ministry reported.

Col. Aptsiauri previously served as the Georgian Army's representative to the US Army Central Command. Earlier he served as the Senior Military Representative of Georgia in Iraq.

No official explanation was offered for the change in leadership. Some Georgian military analysts, however, have suggested that Col. Janjgava, who had only been in the job for less than a year, was dismissed due to a number of live rounds accidents during reservist training.
