Russia should change its position on breakaway regions if Kosovo gains independence, Sergey Mironov, chairman of the Council of Federation, Russia's upper house of Parliament, said on February 5.

“If Kosovo does it [declares independence], I, as a parliamentarian, will insist on Russia revising its position regarding Abkhazia, Transdnestria and South Ossetia,” RIA Novosti quoted Mironov as saying. “Russia can and should do that.”

Last week Konstantin Kosachev, head of the International Relations Committee of the Russian State Duma (lower house of Parliament), also said that Russia should review its “moderate” position on unrecognized republics if the west recognizes the independence of Kosovo. The recognition of Kosovo, he said, “is a very serious factor [to be considered] in revising Russia's cautious policy towards unrecognized republics.”
