Georgian TV Reports: Police Post Attacked on Abkhaz Border
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 21 Jul.'08 / 12:01

A Georgian police post in Akhali Abastumi village on the Abkhaz administrative border came under grenade attack late last night, the Georgian Public Broadcaster and Rustavi 2 TV reported on July 20.

There were no Georgian injuries, according to the reports, but one Abkhaz militiaman died after a grenade accidentally exploded during the attack.

The Abkhaz side although confirmed that one of its border guard serviceman died as a result of grenade explosion, but denied attack on the Georgian police post.

Meanwhile, the authorities in breakaway Abkhazia have denied another report by Georgian TV, according to which additional Russian and Abkhaz forces were deployed in the lower part of the Kodori Gorge on July 19.

“This is yet more fiction from Georgian media sources,” Anatoly Zaitsev, chief of staff of the Abkhaz forces, told Interfax news agency on July 19. “The goal of the Georgian politicians and mass media is to discredit the Russian peacekeeping forces in an attempt to justify their demand to replace them with an international police force.”
