NATO foreign ministers have decided at an emergency session in Brussels to set up a NATO-Georgia commission.

NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said at a news conference after the session that the commission will be the format similar to the one already existing with Ukraine.

He also said hat NATO will assess “the state of Ministry of Defense and the armed forces.”

NATO will also send 15 experts in civil emergency planning to Georgia to help the authorities assess the damage of the civil infrastructure, he said.

He also reiterated NATO’s “full support” to Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

NATO has also called on Russia to fulfill its commitment under the six-point ceasefire accord and start pulling out its forces from Georgia. Scheffer said that he did “not see signals of that happening at the moment.”

He also said that the foreign ministers had also decided not to convene NATO-Russian Council (NRC) unless the Russian forces continue, as he put it, “occupying” territories deep inside Georgia. Scheffer, however, also made it clear that the move did no way mean that NATO was abandoning the NRC.
