Hansjörg Haber was appointed as head of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM), Javier Solana, the EU’s foreign policy chief, said on September 17.

Earlier the EU appointed French diplomat Pierre Morel as its special representative for the Georgia crisis.

Haber, who is the German ambassador to Lebanon, will lead at least 200 EU observers to be deployed by October 1 in the areas outside Abkhazia and South Ossetia currently occupied by Russian troops.

“Hansjörg Haber will have a crucial role in putting together and launching the mission as a key part of the EU's efforts to address the crisis in Georgia and enhance stability in the region,” Solana said.
