The Russian forces are reinstalling checkpoint in the village of Perevi at the South Ossetian administrative border following their re-entering the area only hours after they pulled back from the disputed village on December 12.

On Friday evening a small unit of the Russian troops backed with armored personnel carrier re-entered the village. More troops followed on December 13; the Georgian television stations aired footage showing the Russian soldiers taking positions and reinforcing their posts in the village.

The Georgian police, which entered into Perevi shortly after the Russian troops dismantled their checkpoint there on December 12, had to pull back from the village on Saturday.

“Our police had to withdraw to prevent any complications and tensions,” Mikheil Chogovadze, a governor of the Imereti region, said.

It was not clear what the motive behind Russia’s initial withdrawal and then their re-entering was.

A group of ambassadors from EU-member states was on a pre-planned trip to Perevi, but were not able to enter the village, according to the Georgian media reports. Announcement about the planned visit was made by the French embassy in Tbilisi on December 12 before the Russian troops re-entered the village.

EU Monitoring Mission spokesman said “we are concern” about the reports about the recent development in Perevi.
