Salome Zourabichvili, a former foreign minister and leader of Georgia’s Way party, said that based on series of her consultations with up to dozen of opposition parties three key issues had been revealed, which could be a source of consensus among these parties.

President Saakashvili’s resignation; electoral system reform and holding of early presidential and parliamentary elections are among these issues, Zourabichvili said on January 15.

She said that recently she had held consultations with following parties: New Rights; Republican Party; Conservative Party; Party of People; Movement for United Georgia; Labor Party; Democratic Movement for United Georgia (led by former parliamentary speaker Nino Burjanadze); Traditionalists; Women’s Party; the Greens’ Party and Industrialists.

Zourabichvili also said that former PM Zurab Nogaideli’s newly set up party Movement for Fair Georgia did not share idea on holding of early elections. In November Nogaideli said that he did not see the need for early parliamentary or presidential elections in a short-term period.

Zourabichvili said that now consultations were underway on tactics, which would not involve unification of the opposition parties; instead, she said, a creation of “a united front” to jointly achieve the current leadership’s resignation would be discussed.
