A man has been found guilty in the Tbilisi City Court of sending death threats by email to general director of public broadcaster, Levan Kubaneishvili. He was jailed for six months.

The Interior Ministry said on April 30 that Nikoloz Chikhradze threatened Kubaneishvili with “cutting throat” in the e-mail sent on April 26. The Interior Ministry has also released a video footage of the man confessing of sending the e-mail, citing “antipathy to that person, triggered by unobjective coverage of events by the public broadcaster.”

In July, 2008 the Batumi-based weekly newspaper, Batumelebi, reported, including to the police, that it had received a death threat e-mail. Police questioned some of the journalists from the newspaper as part of the investigation, but no one had been held over the case.
