Davit Berdzenishvili of the Republican Party, part of Alliance for Georgia, said “all or nothing approach” whether on the part of the authorities or the opposition would not help to resolve the crisis.

“All or nothing approach is not characteristic to a normal political process,” he said in an interview with RFE/RL Georgian service on May 14. “’Misha should either go on April 9, or I can’t listen to anything else’ – this is not a position of a responsible political force. Of course inadequate approach that has been revealed by the authorities during the meeting [with opposition leaders on May 11] should be overcome and we should help the authorities to become more adequate… When Saakashvili rejects to acknowledge that there is a crisis in the country, it is destructive path, not the path of a dialogue and negotiations.”

“All or nothing approach – employed whether by the authorities or by some representatives of the opposition – leads the country towards disaster. We are responsible opposition; the authorities are irresponsible and we want to force them to become responsible.” 

“All or nothing is not our path; it is the path of the authorities; so if they think that they have everything, they will be eventually left with nothing,” he added.

Berdzenishvili also said that in the same interview that “a response document” on the authorities’ proposals, voiced by President Saakashvili, was being prepared.

“I hope this document will be shared by the protest organizer parties,” he said.

Berdzenishvili said that the document would include concrete proposals with “concrete deadlines.”

“If he [Saakashvili] says ‘let’s talk about the electoral system’ – we will tell him that one of the sources of these problems is head of election administration; dismissal of [chairman of Central Election Commission] is a matter of hours or few days; is there a problem with the interior ministry? – that is also a matter of hours and few days; shortly speaking issues related with personalities can be resolved before May 26. As far as system changes are concerned – early presidential and parliamentary elections – we are ready to further discuss these issues,” he said.

Like other opposition politicians, he also acknowledged differences on tactics among the opposition parties, which are organizers of the ongoing protests. He also said that although decisions were not made with consensus, “simple majority” was not also enough to endorse a decision among the protest organizer parties. According to Berdzenishvili the Alliance for Georgia is represented during the decision-making process with three votes as the Alliance unites three members – Irakli Alasania’s political team, Republican Party and New Rights Party.
