Two Constitutional Amendments Offered
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 27 Jul.'09 / 19:28

President Saakashvili initiated two drafts of constitutional amendments – one that will allow ten opposition politicians to retake their parliamentary seats and another one envisaging partial relocation of the Parliament to Kutaisi.

According to the proposal the parliamentary sittings should be held in Georgia’s second largest city of Kutaisi starting from January 1, 2012; while other activities, including parliamentary committee hearings will continue in the current parliamentary chamber in Tbilisi. Lawmakers from the parliamentary minority said they were against of the proposal.

Another draft of constitutional amendment allows ten opposition politicians, who gave up their MP credentials after the May, 2008 parliamentary elections claiming ballot rigging, to regain their seats in the legislative body.

According to the proposal those willing to retake the seats will be eligible to do so before January 1, 2010. Those politicians to whom the draft applies declined to accept the proposal.
