Ruling Party Agrees to Reschedule MP By-Elections
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 3 Aug.'09 / 17:52

The ruling party and the parliamentary minority agreed on Monday to hold MP by-elections in three single-mandate majoritarian constituencies only after the election code is reformed.

Christian-Democratic Movement, a leading party in the parliamentary minority, demanded last week to postpone MP by-elections from September 27 and to hold polls simultaneously with local elections, tentatively planned for May 31, 2010.

Change of date will now require the Parliament to pass an amendment to the law to formalize the agreement between the ruling party and the parliamentary minority.

“It is quite natural to hold elections after adopting a new election code,” Davit Bakradze, the parliamentary chairman, said on August 3.
