Russia has reduced number of its troops in Abkhazia and South Ossetia to 1,700 in each, RIA Novosti news agency reported on August 26, quoting Russian Chief of the General Staff of Army, Gen. Nikolai Makarov.

He said that initial plan envisaged maintaining total of 4,800-5,000 servicemen in both of the regions – this number of troops, he said, was stationed in Abkhazia and South Ossetia right after the war.

“We have decided that this number [of servicemen] – 1,700 in each [of the region], armed with modern weapons is enough,” Gen. Makarov said and added that this number of troops were stationed in each of those regions for already three or fourth months.
