NATO-Georgia Commission will meet on a foreign ministerial level in Brussels on December 3 on a sideline of NATO foreign ministers’ summit.

Speaking at a news conference in Brussels on December 2, NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, reiterated the commitment the alliance made in Bucharest summit and said: “They [Georgia and Ukraine] will become NATO members, when they meet the standards and if they so desire.”

He said “progress in reform, which NATO will continue to support” will be discussed during the commission meeting. Rasmussen also thanked Georgia for “the very substantial contingent it is sending to Afghanistan.”

Georgia sent a comany from the II brigade’s 23rd battalion to Afghanistan in November and plans to increase its presence to up to 800 soldiers next year.

Afghanistan will top the agenda of NATO foreign ministerial meeting in Brussels on December 3-4. NATO-Russia Council meeting on the foreign ministerial level is also planned and NATO foreign ministers are also expected to decide on Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina’s request for Membership Action Plan (MAP).
