European Parliament adopted a non-binding resolution on May 20 calling for greater EU involvement in the South Caucasus and for the EU to became "a significant security actor in the region".

The key amendment, which draft of the resolution underwent before being adopted, in respect of Georgia is that the final text no longer includes term "occupied territories" in reference to Georgia's two breakaway regions. (Summary of the draft available here)

The draft resolution said that "Russia and the de facto authorities of the occupied territories, which are under Russian effective control, are blocking" full implementation of a mandate by EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia, which is not able to access the breakaway regions.

Wording of the adopted text in this respect is as follows: the European Parliament "calls on Russia and the de facto authorities of the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to stop blocking" full implementation of EUMM mandate.

Other key points of the text in respect of Georgia, including calls for Russia to fully ceasefire accords, as well as on democratic reforms and on media ownership, remained unchanged.
