EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, welcomed release of a Georgian prisoner by authorities in breakaway Abkhazia.

In a statement on September 10 she expressed hope that the release “will contribute to an improved atmosphere and the building of confidence between Sukhumi and Tbilisi."

Malkhaz Kordzaia, a Georgian army veteran, who spent 19 months in Abkhaz jail, was released by Sokhumi on September 9, as a result of facilitation by EU’s special representative for South Caucasus Peter Semneby.
