Georgian Banks Post GEL 156 mln Profit

Net profit of Georgia's banking sector rose to GEL 156.3 million (about USD 86.8 million) in 2010 after suffering GEL 65 million loss in 2009.

Georgia has 19 banks, including 14 foreign-controlled banks and two branches of foreign banks, with assets totaling more than GEL 10.5 billion, according to the Georgian National Bank (NBG).

Return on assets in the banking sector was 1.7% and return on equity 9.6% in 2010, against -0.8% and -4.3%, respectively, in 2009, according to NBG.
