James Appathurai, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, arrived in Tbilisi late on Wednesday.

On April 7 he will speak to a group of students in the Tbilisi State University and hold talks with the country’s leadership, including with the President, Parliamentary Chairman, Secretary of National Security Council, State Minister for Euro-Atlantic Integration Issues. He will also meet representatives from the opposition parties.

Appathurai, who serves as special representative since December 2010, said in an in an interview with Ekho Moskvy radio station in February, that Georgia had “a long and winding road” to go before joining NATO.

Appathurai, who was NATO's spokesman before taking his current post, also said that increasing democratic control of military and police were among those reform targets, which Georgia set in its Annual National Programme with NATO.
