The group of eight opposition parties, which has an agreement to jointly coordinate electoral system reform efforts, slammed authorities for use of excessive force against protesters on May 26 and also said that the recent developments showed that staging revolutions has no future in Georgia.

The group of eight, which has been strongly condemning People’s Assembly plans to launch rallies, said that the break up of the rally was carried out in a way not to disperse, but “to arrest, physically retaliate and to exemplary punish as many protesters as possible.”

Mikheil Saakashvili, as a political decision-maker, and those who have implemented this decision “bear special responsibility for the recent developments.”

“At the same time, the recent events have confirmed once again that the revolutionary way and those unjustified risks, which will pose threat to our compatriots and our country in such case, have no prospects,” the joint statement of the eight opposition parties reads.

It also called for more consolidation and unity of the political forces and civil society groups, “which have civil responsibility”, in order “to save the democratic future of the country from both the present authorities and revolutionary quakes” through fight for fair elections.
