Court has granted Badri Bitsadze, husband of ex-parliamentary speaker Nino Burjanadze, who was among the leaders of the recent street protests dispersed by the riot police on May 26, GEL 100,000 bail (about USD 60,000), the Georgian prosecutor’s office said on June 1.

Bitsadze, who has not been arrested, was charged by the prosecutor’s office on May 30 “with organizing attacks on policemen by a group, created beforehand.” The prosecutor’s office said on May 30 that it would not seek pre-trial detention for Bitsadze and would only request the court to apply bail.

In a response Nino Burjanadze indicated on May 30, that her family was not going to pay any bail.

“None of [the arrested protesters] has been granted bail and why should my husband be a special exception? Why should he enjoy with a special privilege?” Burjanadze said on May 30.

Bitsadze has to pay the bail within seven days. According to the law, in case of refusal to pay bail a pre-trial detention measure can be applied against an accused.
