U.S. State Department Official Visits Tbilisi

Thomas Melia, the U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor, visits Tbilisi on June 14-15 as part of his trip to three South Caucasus states.

Thomas Melia, who arrived in Tbilisi from Yerevan, holds talks with government officials and opposition representatives.

Melia, who has been serving on the post since August 2010, met on June 14 with Republican Party leader, Davit Usupashvili. The Republican Party is a member of the group of eight – an opposition coalition cooperating jointly on electoral system reform.

The Republican Party said in a statement, that Usupashvili raised at the meeting the issue of need of international monitoring over the investigation of violent acts during dispersal of the street protest rally on May 26. The Republican Party said that issue of electoral system reform was also discussed.
