Burjanadze’s Husband Sentenced in Absentia
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 19 Aug.'11 / 15:53

Tbilisi City Court sentenced on August 19 in absentia Badri Bitsadze, husband of ex-parliamentary speaker and leader of the May street protest rallies Nino Burjanadze, to five years and six months in jail.

The court said that Bitsadze was found guilty of creating “paramilitary group” with an aim “to organize attacks on police with a purpose to stir large-scale physical confrontation” during the street protest rallies this May.

Lawyers of Bitsadze, who has not been arrested and who is formally wanted by the police, say that charges against their client were fabricated and the prosecution’s key witness’s testimony against Bitsadze was obtained through pressure and contained multiple inconsistencies.
