Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 21 Aug.'11 / 22:35

Over dozen of villages were hit by flooding after heavy rain pushed rivers over their banks in Georgia's eastern region of Kakheti on Sunday.

First floors of houses in some of the villages in Lagodekhi, Sagarejo and Gurjaani districts were swamped and local village roads, farmlands and domestic animals washed away.

In the town of Lagodekhi itself residents of two apartment buildings were evacuated because of concerns that swamped basements could destroy the buildings.

Several hundred of houses were flooded in the village of Kabali, fifteen kilometers from Lagodekhi, forcing at least eighty families to leave thier houses, a local news agency Information Center of Kakheti reported.

According to the same news agency a helicopter was sent to evacuate a worker of a local water distribution company in Lagodekhi district, who was trapped by flooding at a water distribution center.

The flooding has also caused disruptions in electricity supply.
