EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM) reiterated in a written statement on Thursday, that it had found no evidence of any planned provocation at the breakaway South Ossetian administrative border.

Moscow accused Tbilisi of preparing “a large-scale provocation” with an allegedly intended “peace march” on August 26, marking third anniversary of recognition of Georgia’s two breakaway regions by Russia. Georgia responded with accusing Moscow of “Soviet-style propaganda” and an attempt to create “artificial tension” in the region.

“There have been a number of claims and reports in recent days that a so called ‘peace march’ is to take place tomorrow, 26 August, with the intention of causing provocation in the vicinity of the South Ossetian Administrative Boundary Line (ABL),” EUMM said in the statement on August 25.

“The EU Monitoring Mission takes seriously any developments that may negatively affect stability at the ABL, and has been monitoring the situation closely, by extra patrolling and speaking to its various interlocutors, including the Georgian authorities.”

“Up to now, the Mission has found no evidence of any planned provocative action at the ABL on 26 August. The Mission calls on all sides to refrain from any statements or actions which may increase tension,” the statement reads.
