In his address at an annual reception for diplomats accredited to the Vatican on January 9, Pope Benedict XVI briefly mentioned Georgia’s last year’s legislative amendments on religious minorities, among, as he put it, “several encouraging signs in the area of religious freedom.” The Georgian Parliament passed legislative amendments, allowing religious minority groups to be registered as legal entities of public law, in July 2011. The move triggered two days of Georgian Orthodox Church-led protest marches. |
