Kutaisi Mayor Resigns
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 12 Sep.'13 / 17:09

Dimitri Kopaliani, the mayor of Georgia’s second largest city of Kutaisi, has resigned after only three months in office.

Kopaliani, who was Kutaisi’s tenth mayor in past ten years, was confirmed on the post by the local city council, Sakrebulo, in early June after the previous mayor Besik Bregadze was voted out by the Sakrebulo, where President Saakashvili’s UNM party lost the majority in April.

Unlike Tbilisi, where mayor is directly elected, mayors of four other “self-governing cities” – Kutaisi; Batumi; Rustavi and Poti, are elected by their respective Sakrebulos.
