Polish and Swedish FMs to Visit Georgia

Foreign ministers of Sweden and Poland, Carl Bildt and Radosław Sikorski, respectively, will visit Georgia next week as part of their trip, which also includes visits to Moldova and Ukraine, ahead of EU’s Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius in late November.

The Polish and Swedish foreign ministers, who were initiators of the Eastern Partnership in 2009, will arrive in Tbilisi on Tuesday evening and meet President Saakashvili and PM Ivanishvili, according to the Swedish Foreign Ministry.

Georgia expects to initial Association Agreement with the EU at the Vilnius summit.

The visit will come less than a week before the October 27 presidential election in Georgia.

Before arriving in Tbilisi, where they will stay till Wednesday morning, the two foreign ministers will visit Chisinau on October 21 and Kiev on October 22.

Before start of the trip in the three countries, Bildt and Sikorski will take part in EU foreign ministerial meeting in Luxembourg on October 21 where Eastern Partnership will be one of the items on the agenda.

“This trip is taking place during a critical phase ahead of the summit between the EU and the Eastern Partnership in Vilnius at the end of November. There it is hoped it will be possible to conclude or make progress on a number of agreements between the EU and some of the partnership countries,” the Swedish Foreign Ministry said.

Three other countries in the Eastern Partnership are: Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus.
