Margvelashvili Signs His First Presidential Decree
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 17 Nov.'13 / 17:54

Giorgi Margvelashvili signed his first presidential decree after taking oath of office on Sunday, authorizing government members to perform their duties before parliament’s vote of confidence expected next week.

After the inauguration of Margvelashvili as the president, new constitution went into force according to which the incumbent cabinet, including PM Ivanishvili, had to resign, becoming acting ministers.

Irakli Garibashvili, who is the interior minister, will be formally proposed by the GD parliamentary majority group as a prime ministerial nominee to replace Bidzina Ivanishvili, who plans to quit the post. Garibashvili’s nomination will be then formally presented before the Parliament by the President. Alexandre Tchikaidze will be named as new interior minister to replace Garibashvili. No other change has been yet announced and Garibashvili said he plans no major reshuffle of the existing cabinet.

New constitution significantly cuts new president’s powers at the expense of increasing those of the prime minister.
