Georgian President Visits Turkey

President Giorgi Margvelashvili is paying a state visit to Turkey on January 20.

In Ankara Margvelashvili will meet his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gül, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and speaker of parliament Cemil Çiçek.

This will be Margvelashvili's second foreign visit since becoming the President. His first foreign trip was in Vilnius in November for the Eastern Partnership summit.

In Ankara the Georgian President is accompanied by chief of his administration Lasha Abashidze and his foreign policy adviser Vano Matchavariani, as well as secretary of national security council Irina Imerlishvili; the delegation also includes vice-speaker of the parliament Manana Kobakhidze; chairman of parliament’s foreign affairs committee MP Tedo Japaridze and his deputy MP Zviad Kvatchantiradze.

According to the President’s administration, during the visit Margvelashvili will meet representatives of the Georgian diaspora and will also travel to north-east of Turkey at the Georgian border – area which is referred to in Georgia as Tao-Klarjeti and where number of medieval Georgian monasteries are located.
