Davit Narmania, minister for infrastructure and regional development, who is set to run as ruling Georgian Dream coalition’s candidate for Tbilisi mayoral office in local elections in June, said he’s confident of winning the race in the first round without requirement a runoff.

After initial refusal, GD agreed to set minimal threshold for electing both mayors and heads of municipalities (gamgebelis) in the first round of vote at 50%, instead of initially proposed 40% and 33%, respectively.

“It’s a serious challenge on the one hand,” Narmania told journalists on February 18 while commenting on setting 50% threshold. “But on the other hand political parties should be more mobilized.”

“Our political force is ready for clearing this threshold and there has not been and is not any problem with it,” he said.

Asked if there is a chance for second round runoff in Tbilisi, Narmania responded: “There will be no second round whatsoever.”

Other political parties have yet to name their mayoral candidate in Tbilisi; UNM opposition party said it plans to select a candidate through internal party elections.

Nino Burjanadze, leader of Democratic Movement-United Georgia who garnered slightly over 10% of votes in 2013 presidential elections, said on February 18 that consultations are ongoing among some non-parliamentary opposition parties about possibility of running in a bloc in the local elections, but nothing is yet decided.
