Foreign Minister of Denmark, Martin Lidegaard, met his Georgian counterpart Maia Panjikidze and PM Irakli Garibashvili in Tbilisi on April 9.

He will also meet with President Giorgi Margvelashvili and will visit Tserovani, a settlement for families displaced as a result of the August 2008 war.

The Danish Foreign Minister arrived in Georgia after visiting Moldova on April 8.

Before the visit he said that trip to Moldova and Georgia would aim at sending “a strong signal showing Denmark’s and European Union’s support” to these countries.

“The two countries have chosen to maintain a European course and want agreements on cooperation and free trade with the European Union even though they are under different kinds of pressure,” Lidegaard said. “There is a long way to go but both countries have made progress, which I find very positive… My visit will take place in a fateful hour for the European Union’s policy towards our Eastern partners. There is a need for looking critically at what we have done right, what we can do better and – first and foremost – where we wish to end up.”

Before visiting Chisinau and Tbilisi, the Danish Foreign Minister held talks with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin on April 7.
