New Rights and Free Georgia, two non-parliamentary opposition parties, have named Kakha Kukava as their candidate for Tbilisi mayoral office in the June 15 local elections.

Kukava, who is the leader of Free Georgia party, ran for a majoritarian MP seat in 2013 by-election in Tbilisi’s Nadzaladevi constituency, garnering slightly over 17% of votes and losing the race to GD’s candidate Tamar Kordzaia, who won the seat with over 39%.

Kukava, who is now a member of Tbilisi City Council, was with the Conservative Party before launching his Free Georgia party in 2010. Free Georgia received 0.27% of votes in the 2012 parliamentary elections and the New Rights garnered 0.43% of votes in the same elections.

New Rights and Free Democrats were in consultations with Burjanadze to form a broader non-parliamentary opposition alliance, but failed to reach an agreement and Burjanadze’s Democratic Movement-United Georgia (DMUG) party teamed up with Christian-Democratic Movement (CDM).

Kukava is the sixth candidate who has announced about intention to run for Tbilisi mayoral office.

Others are: GD’s Davit Narmania, the minister of infrastructure; UNM’s Nika Melia, head of Tbilisi’s Mtatsminda district; MP Giorgi Gachechiladze, who is the leader of Greens’ Party and who quit the GD parliamentary majority in February; a coalition of CDM and Burjanadze’s DMUG named former lawmaker Dimitri Lortkipanidze and Labor Party named actress Asmat Tkabladze.
