Iranian President Meets Georgian Diplomat, Raises Rail Link with Georgia via Azerbaijan

President of Iran Hassan Rouhani said the entire region would benefit from development of a railway project linking Iran with Georgia via Azerbaijan, according to a press release on the Iranian President’s website.

Construction of the Qazvin-Rasht-Anzali-Astara Railway is underway to link Iran with Azerbaijan and further with Russia and Georgia.

Speaking at a meeting with newly appointed Georgian ambassador to Tehran, Ioseb Chakhvashvili, who presented his credentials to the Iranian President, Rouhani reiterated readiness “to expand relations” with Georgia, according to a press release by the Iranian President’s office.

It also said the Iranian President expressed hope that Georgia’s “new ambassador would explore the grounds to enhance level of mutual relations in all fields.”

“Referring to the historical ties between the two nations, he [Rouhani] said that the Islamic Republic of Iran is willing to develop economic cooperation with Georgia,” reads the press release.
