Parliament Sets Up Group of Confidence
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 15 May.'14 / 16:38

Parliament set up on May 14 Group of Confidence, a team of five lawmakers in charge of providing parliamentary oversight on secret defense and security expenditures and programs.

The group includes three lawmakers from the GD parliamentary majority; one UNM MP and one independent MP.

GD MP Irakli Sesiashvili in his capacity of chairman of the parliamentary committee for defense and security is ex officio member of the group and its chairman. Other members are: MP Davit Saganelidze, leader of GD parliamentary majority group; GD MP Zviad Dzidziguri, who is vice speaker of the parliament; Kakhaber Okriashvili, an independent majoritarian MP, and UNM MP Givi Targamadze, who chaired parliamentary committee for defense and security in two previous parliaments.

In February, 2014 the Parliament simplified rule of composition of the Group of Confidence. Previously a parliamentary vote was required for endorsing members of the group, but because many GD lawmakers were refusing to support UNM-nominated candidate, Givi Targamadze, establishment of the group was dragging out. Earlier this year the rule was changed, allowing the Parliament to establish the group only through “taking note” of composition of the group.
