Tbilisi City Court overruled on June 10 Central Election Commission’s (CEC) decision and ordered that opposition UNM party’s candidate for the post of head (gamgebeli) of Marneuli municipality is eligible to run in the June 15 local elections.

Earlier this month chairman of District Election Commission in Marneuli annulled registration of gamgebeli candidate, Akmamed Imamquliyev, citing his failure to meet two-year residency term.

UNM, which claimed that the authorities wanted its candidate out of the race, appealed the decision to the CEC; the latter, however, upheld the decision and UNM then appealed it to the court and won the case. CEC does not intend to appeal the ruling to higher court.
