Ministry of Defense has launched construction of a basic combat training center for recruits in Akhalkalaki at the site which hosted the Russian military base before it was pulled out in 2007.

"It’s a historic decision taken by the Georgian government. The Soviet army was based here and today this place is acquiring a new meaning,” said Defense Minister Irakli Alasania, who along with chief of general staff of the armed forces Vakhtang Kapanadze took part in groundbreaking ceremony on August 14.

First phase of the construction, involving building of the headquarters, dining facility and barracks, is scheduled to be over by the end of 2015. The second phase, involving construction of sports facilities, accommodation for officers and their families, is scheduled to be completed by 2019, according to the Ministry of Defense.

Defense Minister Alasania said that the basic combat training center will also be important for the local population as they will be able to supply the base with locally produced agriculture products.
