Georgian President Comments on Saakashvili Appointment in Ukraine

President Margvelashvili said that it is Ukraine’s internal matter and a sovereign right to decide whom to appoint on which official post, but also added that appointing Georgia’s ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili, who is wanted by Tbilisi, as Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s adviser, may cause “awkward” situation in bilateral ties.

“I respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and I am not going to comment on Ukraine’s internal politics,” Margvelashvili told journalists when asked about Saakashvili’s appointment in Ukraine.

“Although I also note that it may cause certain awkward situation,” he added. 
 
The Georgian President also said that both the Georgian and Ukrainian authorities “have a mandate” from the people of their respective countries to have close bilateral relations to support each other.

“I think we will be able not to let fueling of this awkward situation,” he said.
