PM Irakli Garibashvili said he will appoint Nodar Javakhishvili as new minister for regional development and infrastructure, replacing Davit Shavliashvili, who filed resignation on April 21.

Javakhishvili, who was Georgia’s central bank chief in 1993-98, has served as deputy infrastructure minister since December, 2014.

Before becoming the deputy minister, Javakhishvili was chief executive of ex-PM Bidzina Ivanishvili’s bank Cartu.

In a newspaper interview in March, Javakhishvili, who at the time was deputy infrastructure minister, criticized then minister Shavliashvili and said that he “can’t say he [Shavliashvili] is a good minister.”

PM Garibashvili said that Shavliashvili resigned because of health reasons. He praised the ex-minister as an “efficient manager” and also said that Shavliashvili had asked for resignation for number of times since December, but he was declining to accept it up until now.

Appointment of new infrastructure minister by PM Garibashvili will not require approval of the Parliament.

Confidence vote from the Parliament is only needed when more than one-third of 20-member cabinet is changed.

Shavliashvili is the fifth cabinet member to be replaced since the current government won confidence vote in the Parliament in July, 2014.
