Prosecutor’s Office Says Probe Launched into Blackmail Allegations Voiced by Rustavi 2 TV Head

Georgian Chief Prosecutor’s Office said it opened an investigation into allegations voiced by head of the Rustavi 2 TV on October 21 about receiving a threat from the government to leak a video of his personal life if he refuses to “step aside” from the television station, which is in a court battle over ownership dispute.

“The investigation has been launched under the first part of article 150 of criminal code,” a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office told Civil.ge. “Nika Gvaramia will be summoned as a witness to testify.”

The article of the criminal code in question deals with cases of “physical or psychological coercion.”

According to the prosecutor’s office, Gvaramia is expected to appear before investigators on Thursday noon.
