Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 5 Jul.'16 / 15:35

25th annual session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly concluded in Tbilisi on Tuesday with the election of Austrian MP Christine Muttonen as the Assembly’s new President defeating in the second round of voting Gigi Tsereteli, a lawmaker from Georgia’s opposition UNM party.

MP Tsereteli’s candidacy, which was backed by the European People’s Party (EPP) to which UNM is a partner party, was strongly opposed by Georgia’s ruling GDDG party, which was backing Christine Muttonen, a parliamentarian from the Social Democratic Party.

The third candidate was French MP Alain Neri. None of the candidates received enough votes required for election; MP Tsereteli was the runner up. Christine Muttonen won in the second round with 86 votes to Tsereteli’s 73.
